Quick Comparison: Argos, IKEA, Dunelm & The Range

Argos Chest of Drawers White and Plastic Options

The Argos Home Seville 3 Drawer Chest is a core product in this category. Priced at around £46, it is described as a compact unit for tight spaces. The listing and reseller pages suggest a wood and plastic construction with a white finish. According to supplier information on the Argos Q&A, the panel thickness is 15 mm. The chest does not come with assembly tools — you will need a tape measure, hammer, goggles, Phillips screwdriver, and scissors. One Q&A also notes that it does not include anything to stop items falling out the back.

What sizes and styles are available in white?

Argos offers a range of white chests, from compact three-drawer units to five-drawer versions like the Seville 5 Drawer Chest. The five-drawer model is also marketed as compact and suitable for alcoves or against walls. Plastic handles are a common feature, described as easy to grip and wipe clean. The company positions these chests as extra storage solutions with compact options and tallboys designed to save floor space.

Are plastic drawers from Argos durable?

Durability depends on the specific model and its intended use. The Argos Home Seville series, which uses a mix of wood and plastic, receives a 3.9/5 rating from over 1,200 reviews. Buyers often describe it as sturdy enough for the price. However, some reports mention finish issues and occasional damage. Plastic chests in the Argos storage drawers category are presented as lightweight and functional rather than long-term investments.

Comparing Argos Chest of Drawers with Dunelm, IKEA, and The Range

How does Argos compare to IKEA?

IKEA typically offers strong value on flat-pack storage. Its budget drawer units often win on assembly clarity and parts availability. Many IKEA units use particleboard or fibreboard with white finishes. IKEA’s assembly experience is generally regarded as the best among budget furniture retailers, with detailed pictorial instructions and standard tool compatibility. However, IKEA delivery can sometimes be more expensive than Argos for larger items.

Is Dunelm a better choice than Argos?

Dunelm tends to sit mid-range between budget and home-fashion retail. Its chests often feature broader decorative styling and a better perceived finish than ultra-budget options. Dunelm is usually more expensive than the cheapest Argos or IKEA basics, but it can be competitive during sales or clearance events. For white plastic-style storage, however, Dunelm is less likely to be the first choice — its emphasis is more on bedroom furniture with a home décor focus.

How does The Range compare on price?

The Range is known for low sticker prices and frequent promotions. It can undercut Argos on price, especially on basic storage units. The Range offers a wide assortment and regular clearance and deal activity. Quality consistency, however, may vary more across brands and suppliers. In practice, The Range is often one of the closest competitors to Argos for cheap bedroom storage, though reviews indicate more mixed experiences with build quality and packaging.

The best practice is to check the Argos stock checker for real-time clearance inventory and read return policies carefully for clearance items.

Why context matters: Argos and the UK chest of drawers market

Argos dominates the UK chest of drawers market with a wide selection across price points and materials. Competitors like IKEA focus on flat-pack modern design, Dunelm offers mid-market traditional styles, and The Range competes primarily on price. The main trade-off for consumers is convenience (Argos fast delivery and Click & Collect) versus design variety (IKEA) versus the lowest possible price (The Range). Plastic chests represent a niche advantage for Argos, particularly for utility spaces such as garages and children’s rooms, where easy cleaning and light weight are priorities.
